What the Different Types of Retractable Awning Hardware Are

There are different kinds of awnings available that will provide shade and protection from the elements. With the exception of small ornamental awnings, the 2 most common types of these awnings are made from either aluminum or a retractable fabric. These 2 kinds of canopies are totally different in construction, and each one will require specific hardware.

Aluminum awnings are larger than their retractable fabric awning counterparts. These permanent structures have an aluminum sheeting that covers a steel or aluminum frame. These sheets will be attached by three-eights of an inch to 2-inch sheet metal screws.

Once the frame has been constructed, it is usually placed on I-beams for more strength. Aluminum beams are sold for this purpose and can range between 4 – 7 inches in width and can be bought in 20- or 24-foot lengths. The entire structure will then be placed on posts.

Awning posts are standard aluminum hardware and made from heavy-gauge aluminum or steel, which are 3 inches wide and 8 – 12 feet long. They are placed for support every 7 – 12 feet and will provide extra support for the overhang. These are set into post brackets that have been attached to a concrete foundation with a three-eighths of an inch bolt or placed inside newly poured concrete footers.
